Robotics – Operating Systems –

This week for robotics we have been learning about operating systems. An operating system is a program which manages a computers resources. It also supports a computers basic function, such ad scheduling tasks. There are many different systems for different devices.

Writing -Anzac Day

This week for inquiry we have been learning about Anzac day. This is what I already knew.

  • Anzac day was on the 25th of April 1915.
  • It is a day to commemorate and honor the people that lost their lives fighting for our country.
  • It marks the first major military action that the Australians and New Zealanders fought in World War 1 in gallipoli.
  • A.N.Z.A.C stands for Australia and New Zealand army corps.
  • The symbol that represents Anzac day is a poppy.
  • The reason the poppy represents Anzac day is because after the war, the field they fought on had grown poppies all over the field.

And this is what I found out.

  • The fight that was fought in gallipoli lasted 8 months.
  • World War 1 lasted from 1914 – 1918.
  • Red poppies are sold on Anzac day to support the New Zealand soldiers family.
  • 2000-2500 New Zealanders died.
  • Over 10,000 soldiers died all together.
  • 1921 was when Anzac day and the public holiday was created.
  • The rosemary is also a representative of Anzac day.

Maths- Decimals

This week I have been learning how to show the decimal of a shape. A decimal number is a part of a whole number

For Challenge 1 I had to use the grid to show 1/10 of the shape in green, 2/10 of the shape purple and 5/10 of the shape in blue. As well as what decimal there were by themselves and all together. I found this quite easy but also a bit confusing. Green is 0.1, Purple is 0.2 and Green is 0.5. All together they are 0.8.

Reading – Disasters

This week for reading I have been reading about disasters. There are many types of disasters like Tornado, Hurricanes, Floods, Wildfires, Earthquakes and Droughts. The book I read was called The Cardboard Cathedral. From the title I made a prediction that the story was going to be about how an earthquake destroyed a Cathedral and how the city was going to fix it. My prediction was not exactly right but the first part was. The story was about an earthquake that destroyed a Cathedral in Christchurch. Then the Cathedral was pulled down and some architects and engineers came and made a temporary replacement made out of cardboard.

Inquiry- Tonga’s Volcanic Eruption

This week for inquiry I have been gathering information about a volcanic disaster that happened in Hunga Tonga–Hunga Ha’apai. First of all what is an eruption? An eruption is an explosion of lava and steam from a Volcano. When a Volcano erupts, it erupts a huge amount of lava, ash, and steam in the air. The Volcanic eruption happened on the 20th of December 2021. The powerful climax carried on to the 15th of January 2022. The Volcano’s powerful climax triggered a Tsunami which destroyed homes on the nearby Islands of Tonga.

Deep within the earths core it is so hot that some rock slowly melt and become a thick flowing substance called magma. The magma is lighter than the rock around it so the magma slowly rises and collects into magma chambers. Eventually the magma rises to the top of a volcano and it erupts. The most dangerous type of eruption I learnt about is called a Glowing Avalance. That is when fresh, burning, hot magma erupt’s down the side of the volcano. The lava can reach temperatures 1,200 degrees Fahrenheit.

Maths – Fractions

This week I have been learning about fractions. There are 3 different types of fractions, Equivalent, Improper and Whole Fractions. An equivalent fraction is when 2 different fractions represent the same amount/size but look different. An improper fraction is when the numerator is bigger that the denominator, such as 5/4. Lastly a whole fraction is when the numerator and denominator are the same like 8/8 which then equals 1. That’s because you have every piece of the fraction. Here is an example of what I was doing for my work.

For this task I had show 3 different ways I could use the red lines to show half of the shape. There are 24 triangles in the shape and to get 1/2 of the shape we halved 24 to get 12 triangles. I found this first slide pretty easy but as I went on the tasks got more challenging. I would really like to do this again to learn more about fractions.
